About this book
On the Reception of the 'Origin of Species' is a work by Thomas Henry Huxley. The text says that, to the present generation, the name of Charles Darwin stands alongside of those of Isaac Newton and Michael Faraday. The text says even the theologians have almost ceased to pit the plain meaning of Genesis against the no less plain meaning of Nature.
The text calls Whewell's 'History of the Inductive Sciences,' whatever its philosophical value, always worth reading and always interesting. The text says the doctrine of Evolution does not even come into contact with Theism, considered as a philosophical doctrine. The text says the doctrine of Evolution collides with, and is absolutely inconsistent with, the conception of creation which theological speculators have based upon the history narrated in the opening of the book of Genesis. The text speaks of a great deal of talk and not a little lamentation about the so-called religious difficulties which physical science has created, and says that in theological science it has created none.
