About this book

In three New York lectures delivered in 1876, Thomas Henry Huxley asks how evidence can establish the past history of nature. He sets out competing explanations of the world's origins and distinguishes a strongly supported belief from absolute certainty. The collection also includes his address at the opening of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and a London lecture on the study of biology.

Fossil horses give the argument a concrete focus. Huxley compares extinct animals with living horses, examining toes, limb bones and teeth to connect changes in structure with their order in geological time. He also describes how new discoveries can alter an earlier account of ancestry. Readers interested in the history of science will find both a case for evolution and an example of how a public lecturer turns anatomical detail into a sustained argument about evidence.
