About this book
One Thousand Ways to Make a Living, or an Encyclopædia of Plans to Make Money, was collated and edited by Harold M. Dunphy, LL.B., a graduate of the University of Michigan and an attorney at law. The first edition is dated Spokane, Washington, 1919. A note at the front says the contents took years to gather from across the continent and in some cases from Europe, and that the editor aimed at a plain, unvarnished account of how to make a livelihood.
The plans are numbered. One tells of a widow who collected formulas for hair trouble, advertised in newspapers and offered a formula for 50 cents. Plan No. 48 is making harness dressing to sell to farmers. Another passage explains telephone exchanges, contrasting a magneto system for a small town with the central-energy system used in cities. A further passage tells of a man who took work in a city clerk's office and decided to run for the office of commissioner.
