Your plants is by James Sheehan and offers plain and practical directions for the treatment of tender and hardy plants in the house and in the garden. The contents list names chapters on, among others, how to make a lawn, making and planting flower beds, wintering plants in cellars and the law of color in flowers. The text names a mixture that, it says, made “the finest sward we ever saw”: 10 quarts Rhode Island Bent-grass, 4 quarts White Clover, 8 quarts Kentucky Blue-grass and 6 quarts Red-top Grass. The text says grass seed can be sown in the fall any time from the first of October to the first of December.
Directions in the text say to place sand in a box, or cold frame, to the depth of eight inches in the fall. The text says that, if rightly done, we may expect at the least fifty per cent of the cuttings to come from their winter bed finely rooted.
