About this book
Anna Seward's collection was printed in London in 1799 and joins original sonnets on various subjects with odes paraphrased from Horace. Her preface says that, with only nine exceptions out of the hundred, the poems are strictly sonnets, and that the nine differ only in rhyming three times instead of four in the first part.
Sonnet I calls on Imagination to relume her orient lamp, and Sonnet III is headed Written at Buxton in a Rainy Season, with mists, mountains and clouds. Sonnet XCVII, dated Lichfield, March 1790, is addressed to a coffin-lid and mentions a dear father. Another passage, in prose, considers what readers without the dead languages expect, and mentions the Latin measures and the elegance of Horace.
