About this book
The book is A Selection from the Lyrical Poems of Robert Herrick, arranged with introduction by Francis Turner Palgrave. The contents list poems headed The Wassail, The Fairies, Ceremony upon Candlemas Eve, Corina's Going a Maying and The Maypole. The text says the great majority of readers cannot bring either leisure or taste, or information sufficient to take them through a large mass (at any rate) of ancient verse.
The text also says that even unaccustomed forms of spelling are an effort to the eye. The poems include one headed To His Honoured and Most Ingenious Friend Mr Charles Cotton and another headed A New Year's Gift, Sent to Sir Simeon Steward. A poem headed To His Conscience asks, Can I not sin, but thou wilt be my private protonotary?
