About this book

Original Stories from Real Life is a book by Mary Wollstonecraft with conversations, calculated to regulate the affections, and form the mind to truth and goodness. The preface says these conversations and tales are accommodated to the present state of society, which obliges the author to attempt to cure those faults by reason. The text says virtue is immortal, and that goodness arises from a quick perception of truth, and actions conformable to the conviction.

One chapter takes in The History of Peggy and her Family and The Sailor’s Widow, and has Mrs. Mason say one morning to her pupils that we are all dependent on each other. The text describes Mrs. Trueman, the curate’s wife, who lives in yonder white house close to the church, and whose little ones hang on her hands, and cling to her clothes.
