About this book

Story Lessons on Character-Building (Morals) and Manners is by Loïs Bates, author of Kindergarten Guide, New Recitations for Infants and Games Without Music. The preface says that although it is admitted by all teachers, in theory at least, that morals and manners are essential subjects in the curriculum of life, very few give them an appointed place in the school routine. The alphabetical lists of subjects include moral subjects such as Kindness to Animals, Laziness and Love of the Beautiful, and manners such as Banging Doors, Clumsy People and Coughing.

A story about Lewis has his mother telling him to hurry up or he would be too late, and the boat steaming off by the time he reached the pier, and the writer says Lewis was cured of his fault by this disappointment. The text says the saliva is never to be sent out of the mouth in the way that is called spitting, and that the best plan of all is to have a damp sponge, as well as a slate rag.
