About this book
An eyeglass and carefully cultivated manners make Dudie Dunne look like easy prey on a New York street corner. Boys steal his clothes, and the men who restore them soon notice his roll of money. The opening turns this apparent helplessness into a detective's performance, setting up Oscar's use of disguise to draw out people who think they have found a fool.
Old Sleuth combines comic exchanges with an investigation that depends on testing suspicions. In a later scene, an older woman asks Oscar to establish whether a young man is guilty or innocent. He refuses to manufacture evidence for a reward, then seeks information from a burglar in prison before following a hint to Long Island. The contrast between his exaggerated public manner and his insistence on honest evidence gives readers two sides of his method: playacting in the street and careful judgment when taking a case.
