About this book

A tomato thrown at a tannery door gives the opening of this detective novel a sharp, unruly start. In the village of Hambleton, Simon Varr runs a thriving business behind shabby buildings and faces workers who have spent three weeks on strike. Their demands for better pay and conditions expose both his power over the village and the anger it has earned him. Even a shopkeeper's willingness to offer credit is caught in Varr's web of ownership.

The pressure follows him into his house, where Miss Ocky confronts him about Lucy and urges him to agree to a divorce. Their tense exchange is interrupted by what she thinks may be a monk near a silver birch outside. Armstrong Livingston sets outspoken argument beside an uncertain sighting, making ordinary grievances feel charged with mystery. The appeal lies in watching public resentment and private conflict gather around a man accustomed to having his own way.
