About this book
Our Humble Helpers has Uncle Paul gathering Emile, Jules, and Louis under the garden's big elm tree. Uncle Paul proposes to tell the story of domestic animals after accounts of creatures that destroy harvests and creatures that protect them. The talk about guinea-hens recommends placing their eggs under a common hen, which is said to make no distinction between her own and unfamiliar eggs.
The care of newly hatched guinea-chicks includes warmth and assiduous attention, with breadcrumbs and hard-boiled eggs among the foods supplied in their first week. Emile describes the cat's claws through cords and pulleys, saying that the claws remain sheathed until cords or tendons pull them out. A description of the coop keeps the mother inside to watch over the young chickens and call them to her at the least appearance of danger.
