About this book
Before accepting a familiar fable, Jean-Henri Fabre asks what the insect itself can tell us. His account opens by challenging the story of the cicada and the ant, comparing its details with the habits of cicadas in southern France. The chapters then turn to crickets, mantises, moths, beetles and weevils, treating their songs, nests, feeding and care of their young as subjects for close observation.
Fabre writes as a naturalist who watches patiently and tests his explanations. In the account of the bee-hunting Philanthus, he compares behaviour under a glass enclosure with activity around outdoor burrows, checking whether captivity has changed what he sees. These studies give readers both descriptions of insect life and an example of how evidence can correct received stories. The appeal lies in following small, ordinary creatures closely enough to notice patterns that a passing glance would miss.
