About this book

An untilled patch of stony ground in Provence becomes Jean-Henri Fabre's long awaited outdoor laboratory. He opens these natural history essays by describing the land he has finally obtained and defending his habit of watching living insects closely. The volume brings together studies of flies with accounts of ponds, caddis worms and other small creatures, alongside memories of schooling, childhood and mathematics.

Fabre makes observation the centre of his writing. In the passage on flesh flies, he follows newly born larvae as they begin feeding, compares their development with that of greenbottles, and examines how their breathing structures work. His explanations move between precise detail and comparisons with familiar objects, including flowers. The autobiographical chapters give this patient observer a personal presence within the scientific material. Readers interested in insects or the history of nature writing can see how questions, experiments and everyday surroundings shape his account of animal life.
