About this book
S. A. Reilly's Our Legal Heritage runs from King AEthelbert to King George III, 600 A.D. to 1776. The preface says the book was written for people with an interest in English legal history who don't know where to start reading. The preface says the book's purpose is also to look at history through its laws, which do not lend themselves to interpretation, and thus points of view, as does conventional history. The preface says the book includes, among other things, the complete law codes of King Alfred and of King Aethelbert, the law code of King Canute, paraphrased, and excerpts from the law code of Henry I.
The text notes that the word for man was “waepnedmenn” or weaponed person, and a woman was “wifmenn” or wife person. The text says there was a toll on ships entering the port of London to pay for repairs to its walls.
