About this book
The History of England, from the Accession of Henry III. to the Death of Edward III. (1216-1377) is by T. F. Tout. The work carries the heading The Political History of England in Twelve Volumes. The opening note says seventy-six years have passed since Lingard completed his History of England, which ends with the Revolution of 1688, and that historical study has made a great advance.
The text describes Louis returning to England with reinforcements of only 120 knights, and says Louis reached Dover on April 22. Louis introduced for the first time into England the trébuchet, a recently invented machine that cast great missiles by means of heavy counterpoises. The text records that Archbishop Winchelsea died in May, 1313, and left behind him the reputation of a saint and a hero.
