About this book
Copyright: Its History and Its Law is by Richard Rogers Bowker, dated 1912. Its foreword begins with the American copyright code of 1909 and the new British code adopted in December 1911 to take effect on July 1, 1912, and it mentions the Berlin convention.
One section of the history deals with classic times. It says nothing shows authors' rights in Greek literature, while Roman literature mentions the sale of play rights by dramatists such as Terence, booksellers who sold copies of poems, Martial's named booksellers, Horace's complaint about the Sosius brothers, and the jurist Gaius. Another passage covers monastic copyists, including St. Columba and Finnian. A further passage describes a memorial by American authors urging Congress to pass an International Copyright Law, with Lowell's quatrain on the subject. An index lists topics such as Contract, Constitutional provision and Conventions.
