About this book

A detective with his arm in a sling boards a slow train after an investigation has gone badly wrong. Bathurst was sent to Groveland, a prosperous farming township shaken by the disappearances of Nellie Ewing and Mamie Rutger. His effort to work quietly has brought an anonymous warning and a shot from behind a hedge. The first-person account begins with that setback, then explains the events that drew him into the case.

Lawrence L. Lynch builds the mystery around a community whose neighbors have known one another for years. Familiar homes and country roads become places of uncertainty as searchers struggle to find a useful clue. In a later conversation, Bathurst and Carnes test possible explanations, returning to the question of motive and the puzzle of Nellie's missing pony.
