About this book
A carriage ride home from a Yorkshire ball turns dangerous when a cyclist stops Squire Carrington and his son on a lonely moor. Laurence has been teasing his father about his nervous precautions, but a face at the window and a sudden shot give those fears a different weight. The opening places family unease beside the ordinary details of country life: servants, neighbouring estates and an evening's dancing.
A. Eric Bayly builds this detective novel around troubling encounters and people with explanations to conceal. In a later scene, Laurence and Lena enter a damp, dark house to question Doctor Meadows about his connection with the Squire. A stolen bicycle and disputed midnight movements become points of inquiry.
