About this book
The discussion of Greek water-worship considers the pagan cult along the line of Hellenic thought where the text says it impinged most strongly upon Christianity. Potter's account of water-worship among the Greeks says that at least every person coming to solemn sacrifices was purified by water, with holy water commonly placed at temple entrances. The description of water purification says the water was consecrated with a burning torch from the altar, sometimes using that torch to sprinkle people entering the temple.
The discussion of the mass traces its origin to unbloody sacrifices offered to the Paphian Venus and her counterpart in Babylonia and Assyria, describing the mass as central to Roman Catholic worship for centuries. A quoted account says worship of the Goddess-Mother with a child in her arms continued in Egypt until Christianity entered.
