About this book

Glahn's world contracts to a hut, an uneasy visit and the changing warmth of a woman's manner. Recovering from illness, he asks what he has done to displease her, then answers her offered hand with a formal bow. In this Norwegian novel, small gestures carry the weight of wounded feeling, and the first-person voice lets the reader follow each hesitation and sudden response from inside his thoughts.

Outside, that strain gives way to an intense love of the woods. Glahn names birds, stones and insects, rows to a flower-covered islet, and finds comfort in the sea's sound. Back home he shares a meal with Æsop before walking among the trees again. The closeness of these encounters with the natural world makes the book appealing to readers drawn to inward fiction, where landscape and emotional weather are closely connected.

About the author

Knut Hamsun

Hunger, in 1890, narrates a starving writer walking around Kristiania in a voice that abandoned realism entirely, and Kafka, Hemingway, Thomas Mann and Isaac Bashevis Singer all named it as a beginning. The Nobel came in 1920 for Growth of the Soil.
