About this book
Wanderers is by Knut Hamsun, translated from the Norwegian by W. W. Worster, who also wrote an introduction. The contents list sections titled “Under the Autumn Star” and “A Wanderer Plays on Muted Strings”, and an epilogue. The introduction says an autobiographical element is evident in practically everything that Hamsun has written, and names a central figure through whose vision the fates of Captain Falkenberg and his wife are seen, Knut Pedersen from the Northlands.
The narrator says that he and Grindhusen came to the vicarage on a Saturday, after much doubting, Grindhusen having at last agreed to take him as his mate. A priest asks the workmen to come and look at the garden wall, and they set the crumbling wall to rights while a young lady comes out and stands looking on. A passage says Fru Falkenberg had been playing with her husband for some little time, affecting indifference to his indifference, while Captain Falkenberg looked on.
