About this book
The title page reads Paradise Garden, the satirical narrative of a great experiment, by George Gibbs. The contents list, among others, chapters titled The Great Experiment, Jerry, Jerry Grows, Enter Eve and The Minx Returns.
Horsham Manor is described as a fine Georgian house set handsomely enough in a cleft of the hills. A speaker introduces Mr. Canby to Christopher as Master Jeremiah's new tutor. The narrator is a little reluctant to admit that the earliest impression of the subject of these memoirs was disappointing, and sees a boy of ten, well grown for his years, who ambled forward rather sheepishly. A gymnasium scene has Jerry and the irritable Carty resting between rounds, and a girl who nodded to Jerry and took one of the chairs by the ring-side. A passage describes a man who walked furiously, because walk he must, because violent physical exercise had always been his panacea.
