About this book

A wounded soldier wakes in hospital to find that his courage has earned recognition under his twin brother's name. Jim Horton remembers exchanging uniforms with Harry before a battle, but the nurse and surgeon treat his explanation as a symptom of his injuries. George Gibbs builds the opening around the gap between Jim's recovering memory and the identity recorded in his papers.

The mystery extends into Paris, where Piquette guides Jim to her apartment on the Boulevard Clichy and warns him about the dangerous Quinlevin. Jim speaks of an obligation that keeps him involved despite the risks, while their conversation brings affection into the intrigue. Published in 1920, this novel combines a wartime identity problem with a story of brothers, loyalty and personal attachment. Readers who enjoy mistaken identities can follow how an outward resemblance unsettles official certainty and makes an apparently simple account difficult to believe.
