About this book

In the rose gardens at Konopisht in Bohemia, Countess Marishka and Hugh Renwick share a private moment on June 12, 1914. Renwick, an under-secretary at the British Embassy in Vienna, declares his love and asks her to marry him. Their conversation gives way to caution when the Archduke approaches with two important visitors. Marishka remembers that she was told to stay out of the garden, and the couple hide beside an arbor.

Beyond the garden, Marishka must weigh offers of help while caught in Captain Goritz's schemes. Letters, guarded rooms, and uncertain loyalties give the romance an atmosphere of suspicion. Renwick's embassy role connects their private hopes to the larger pressures of diplomacy, while the novel's court secrets, flight, disguises, and capture keep the couple's relationship close to political danger.
