About this book
David W. Bartlett's Paris draws on two visits to the city, made under two different governments, once when the head of state was a president of the Republic and once when it was an emperor. His preface says he has sketched people and places as he saw them at both periods and has not tried to write a hand-book. The title promises its people and literature, its life and business.
In one passage he and his party sit at a marble table in a restaurant close to the street, where a waiter hands them a bill of fare with one hundred specifications, including fourteen kinds of fish and eight kinds of pastry. He remarks that Parisians do not trouble strangers with curiosity and contrasts this with London. Another passage turns to Voltaire and the state of the Catholic church in France in his time.
