About this book

From London to Land's End is by Daniel Defoe and also carries Two Letters from the Journey through England by a Gentleman. The introduction says that each of the two works describes England at the end of the first quarter of the eighteenth century, and that Defoe's Journey from London to the Land's End was published in 1724.

The text says that the palace of Hampton Court was first founded and built from the ground by Cardinal Wolsey, a great statesman and favourite of King Henry VIII. The writer also says that if there be a situation on the whole river between Staines Bridge and Windsor Bridge pleasanter than another, it is this of Hampton. Abbotsbury is described as a town anciently famous for a great monastery and now eminent for nothing but its ruins. The writer says Hereford is the dirtiest old city he has seen in England, yet pretty large.

Daniel Defoe

Four books here, and only two of them were signed. Robinson Crusoe appeared in 1719 as the account of a mariner of York, written by himself, and readers took that literally for a while.
