About this book
An appeal for a loan interrupts the daily work of a young clerk in a London auctioneer's office. His employer dismisses the visitor, but the boy follows him into the street and offers his own carefully saved sovereign. George Manville Fenn begins this adventure with a contrast between business cruelty and personal generosity, seen through a boy who has lost his parents and must earn his living beside fellow clerk Esau Dean.
British Columbia provides the wider setting, with frontier life, emigration and gold discoveries shaping the novel for young readers. In a later episode, Esau freezes on a narrow ledge above the water. Gunson and a companion use a spear as a reassuring rail to help him across. The boys' argument afterward gives fear and wounded pride as much attention as the difficult terrain. Readers can find an adventure in which practical help and honest admissions reveal how friendship works under pressure.
