About this book

At New York's Grand Central Depot, Hetty Torrance weighs a possible marriage while remembering the prairie where her father controls Cedar Range. Her ambitions as a singer have met disappointment, and a chance meeting with her old friend Larry brings home closer. Harold Bindloss begins this Western with a wealthy young woman's uncertainty about the life she wants and the people who can offer it.

The prairie scenes bring personal loyalties into contact with hardship and armed suspicion. Hetty and Flora Schuyler share coffee with Larry, whose regular rounds include homesteads short of provisions. Their reunion becomes tense when a sentry outside threatens to reveal his presence. Conversations about wheat fields, money and old friendships give the frontier conflict a domestic scale. Readers interested in Western fiction with a strong romantic thread will find a story shaped by competing claims of family, affection and land.
