The introduction adds that the writer has found out in life that the maxim does very often prove true.
A character named Juanita asks, with great simplicity, whether it was her fault if God had given her a great mass of hair to comb out. A character called the Corregidor says "I'd even say 150", and the bidding goes on till at last he got up to 500 maravedis. A character named Xiména demanded audience of the king, having come to ask whether any amount of honourable service could neutralize a sentence of death incurred.
