About this book
Alive in the Jungle is by Eleanor Stredder and is marked as A Story for the Young. The contents list names chapters called The Old Gray Wolf, In Pursuit and How the Search Ended, among others. In the first chapter, headed The Old Gray Wolf, night was brooding over the wide and swampy Bengal plain, and the moon had sunk low in the west, hiding behind a bank of threatening clouds.
The wolf notices Kathleen's peep-hole, sees the child's white face, and thinks of her half-grown cubs. A character named Kathleen gasps Carl twice and faints in her nurse's arms. A character named Oliver yawns, feeling quite sure beforehand that he should detest a fat boy who ate nothing but butter and sugar.
