About this book
An offer of wealth in France puts Virginia's attachment to her mother and Paul under pressure. Set on Mauritius, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's 1787 novel brings love and friendship into conflict with plans for a secure future. Madame de la Tour urges her daughter to consider the hardship she might face without money. Virginia answers with trust in providence and a desire to stay beside her mother, while a visiting priest presents obedience to an older relative as a religious duty.
The conversation makes family affection, financial dependence and moral persuasion part of the same difficult choice. The book's subjects also include charity, slavery and shipwrecks, placing its intimate concerns within a wider island setting. This edition includes a memoir that traces the author's close attention to nature and living creatures.
