About this book
The contents list for Philip Henry Sheridan's memoirs runs from his ancestry, birth and early education, a clerkship in a grocery store and the journey to West Point, to service at Fort Duncan in Texas and Fort Reading in California. One passage describes Fort Duncan on the Rio Grande: lumber so scarce that a washstand board cost three dollars, and soldiers' rations with no fresh vegetables for nearly sixteen months.
To prevent scurvy the men used pulque, the juice of the maguey plant, which Sheridan's company cut about forty miles from the post. Another passage names officers of the Sixth Corps: General Wright, and the division commanders Getty, Russell and Ricketts. Another passage describes dining with the King on August 21, with Bismarck sitting next to the King and acting as interpreter.
