About this book

Sketches from Punch is a book of sketches credited to Phil May, who was born on April 22, 1864 and died on August 5, 1903. A note about Phil May says that his death is a loss that the world of art may not soon retrieve, and that to his wide circle of friends it is an irreparable hurt. The note is signed Owen Seaman and dated from Punch, August 12th, 1903, and it mentions delightfully spontaneous sketches made on the backs of the Punch Dinner menus.

The contents list gives dated captions, among others A Sunday Dinner and A Soft Answer. One caption pairs a Minister's Wife, who says that Tommy Crowther has not washed his Face to-day, with the reply of Tommy Crowther. A caption has Father O'Flynn ask Pat Murphy, in this season of Lent, what he will do by way of Penance.
