About this book
Philo-Judæus of Alexandria is a book by Norman Bentwich. The contents list includes, among others, The Jewish Community at Alexandria and Philo as a Philosopher. The preface calls it a melancholy reflection upon the history of the Jews that they have failed to pay due honor to their two greatest philosophers. The preface says Philo-Judæus was neglected by the generations that followed him.
The Egyptian Jews, according to Josephus, claimed that the prophecy of Isaiah had been accomplished. Philo, following his predecessor, is quoted as saying God speaks not words but things. A quoted line says that into the mouth there enter food and drink, the perishable food of a perishable body, while out of it issue words, immortal laws of an immortal soul.
