About this book
John Ayrton Paris's Philosophy in Sport Made Science in Earnest is an attempt to illustrate the first principles of natural philosophy by the aid of popular toys and sports. The dedication is addressed to Miss Maria Edgeworth and speaks of a work which professes to blend amusement with instruction. A character named Mr. Seymour produces a sketch, and its explanation says that A B represent the spoon and trigger in their quiescent position.
Mr. Seymour tells his children that the explanation of a trick would serve to show the manner in which most of the deceptions on cards were performed. A scene has the stop-cock turned, the elastic bladder becoming smaller and smaller, and the features undergoing a corresponding diminution until they once again assumed their original dimensions.
