About this book
Somebody's Luggage is by Charles Dickens. The first chapter, headed "HIS LEAVING IT TILL CALLED FOR", opens with a writer who says he is a Waiter come of a family of Waiters, with five brothers who are all Waiters. A dedication goes to Joseph, much respected Head Waiter at the Slamjam Coffee-house, London, E.C.
The text speaks of the Royal Old Dust-Bin, said to have been so named by George the Fourth, where "your father was Head". The text says "your father came home to your mother in open broad daylight" and took to his bed "with the statement that his eyes were devilled kidneys". Mr. The Englishman had been going to say "Nothing of the solemnity of Death here", but on the whole walked out without saying it. A speaker says he resolved "that whatever he took I would take" and "operated on Mulligatawny, Cayenne Pepper, and Orange Brandy".
