About this book

William Lantry climbs from his grave into the year 2349, carrying a fierce resentment of the living. Below the cemetery lies Salem, a town lit by rocket traffic and dominated by a towering incinerator. The authorities are clearing away the last burial ground, while bodies are swiftly burned as part of an orderly public system. Lantry, still dead despite his ability to walk and speak, sees this world as a threat to his continued existence.

Ray Bradbury's 1948 story combines science fiction with supernatural horror. Its autumn landscape, disturbed graves and bright machinery bring old fears into contact with a future devoted to cleanliness and practical use. Lantry's search for others like himself turns destructive, and the middle excerpt follows the consequences of an incinerator explosion. Readers interested in unsettling visions of progress will find a conflict between a society's treatment of death and one returning man's hatred and loneliness.
