About this book
Public Police Officer Brad Raynor is on his fifth day in uniform, cruising the one thousand level above Nyork in the 32nd century and trying to suppress his boredom. It took him seven years to earn the uniform: four at Harvard and three at the University of Public Protection, with degrees in psychology, sociology and criminalistics. He finds himself longing for the 'good old days' he has read about, though he knows there was nothing romantic about them.
A voice over the speaker sends Car 337 to a signal eighty-three, a minor domestic adjustment problem. In another passage Brad pursues an air-car twenty miles above the surface and calls on the occupant of city car 12Z to pull up and surrender. A further passage has an Administration appointing Mayor Laird guardian of the wife and children of Public Officer Arthur Sommers and removing him as mayor.
