About this book

Children shout, hold hands, run in circles, and climb trees on green lawns while rockets fly overhead and beetle-cars pass along the streets. Mink, described as seven years old, runs into the house and rattles pans and tools into a large sack while her mother hardly sees her. Mink names the game Invasion when Mrs. Morris asks what the children are playing. The older children, aged ten and above, disdain the activity and go hiking or play their own version of hide-and-seek.

Mink tells her mother she will be sure her mother will not be hurt much. Henry demands to know who is entering the house as heavy footsteps, humming, and the children’s giggling are heard. Mink calls for Mom and Dad and asks where they are while the heavy footsteps continue.
