About this book
Jemima Jane wins praise for her neat clothes, quiet manners and devotion to lessons and sewing. When her lively cousin Ann comes to stay, Jane promises to set a good example. Their days soon fill with quarrels, reports to Mama and punishments that reveal how much pleasure Jane takes in being thought the better child. A village cattle fair then gives both cousins a tempting reason to test the household rules.
Written in rhyming verse by G. M. George, this children's tale sets its brisk rhythm against an increasingly sharp account of family discipline and apparent goodness. Jane's polite speeches sit beside her secret spite, while Ann's noisy mischief makes an easy target for adult disapproval. The contrast gives readers a way to consider the difference between good manners and kindness. The story also includes stern punishments and frightening trouble at the fair, giving its comic moral lesson a darker edge.
