About this book

A torn party dress turns a sewing lesson into an urgent concern in Katharine Pyle's collection of children's verse. Jane prefers noisy play to learning stitches, while other children resist getting up, keeping tidy, or going to bed. Their everyday habits bring exaggerated consequences, sometimes through adults and sometimes through the sudden arrival of a figure from a fairy tale. Rhyming lines and frequent dialogue give these small dramas a brisk pace.

Alongside the lessons in conduct are animal stories and encounters with witches. A kitten troubled by a thieving rat seeks advice from an older cat, while another poem gives a stubborn child the startling shape of a giant beet. The mixture of household rules and impossible events makes the collection useful for exploring how older children's writing joined amusement with discipline. Readers can enjoy the verse aloud while noticing the strict expectations behind its playful scenes.
