About this book

Six Colorado Scouts accept a demanding errand: carry a sealed message from their mayor across the mountains to Green Valley. They have fifteen days to cover a hundred miles on foot, taking their own pack animals and choosing their own trail. A newspaper notice alerts rival boys, who plan to intercept the patrol and seize the message. Charley Brown, using the scout name Jim Bridger, introduces the group and tells much of the story.

Edwin L. Sabin combines this outdoor adventure with practical scoutcraft. The boys face a forest fire, hold a fire line and help a man struggling out of the smoke. Notes at the back cover camp shelters, knots, weather signs, maps, signaling and care for pack animals. Readers interested in early Scouting fiction will find a story built around teamwork, resourcefulness and the demands of mountain travel.
