About this book

George Meredith wrote Poems and Lyrics of the Joy of Earth. The contents list names The Woods of Westermain, A Ballad of Past Meridian, The Day of the Daughter of Hades and The Lark Ascending. The same list also gives Phoebus with Admetus, Melampus and Love in the Valley.

A poem in the book tells of poor little Molly, who sings little hymns at the close of the day though she has but three fingers to lift to the Lord and only one leg to kneel down with to pray. A piece headed CAMELUS SALTAT: Continued speaks to an Oracle of the market and says that thence you drew the taste which stamped you guide of the inept. A scene of a mossed old farmhouse has its front door and back open with the morn, while the blackbird’s mellow fluting notes call my darling up with round and roguish challenge.

George Meredith

George Meredith was an English novelist and poet of the Victorian era. At first, his focus was poetry, influenced by John Keats among others, but Meredith gradually established a reputation as a novelist. The Ordeal of Richard Feverel (1859) briefly scandalised Victorian literary circles.
