About this book
Spirits in Bondage, subtitled A Cycle of Lyrics, is credited to C. S. Lewis. The contents are grouped as Part I. The Prison House, Part II. Hesitation and Part III. The Escape. The Prologue speaks of Phoenician men sailing to the Tin Isles straight against the sunset and the edges of the earth, and a speaker promises to sing of lands unknown in a coracle of verses.
The poem headed XX. Sonnet has the stars coming out, the fragrant shadows falling about a dreaming garden still and sweet, and a speaker hearing the unseen bats above. The poem headed XXXIX. World's Desire speaks of a castle built in a country desolate, on a rock above a forest where the trees are grim and great.
