About this book
Ships lie beneath overhanging branches, and rivers run through dense forests in Joaquin Miller's coastal poems. Songs of the Mexican Seas opens with The Sea of Fire, where a Spanish outlaw brings plundered gold to a remote shore. His daughter grows up in a landscape marked by conflict and the lure of hidden wealth. Sunlight, mountains, tangled masts and still water give the scenes their texture, while references to creation turn the forest into a place of religious wonder.
The contents also include two parts of The Rhyme of the Great River. Across the excerpts, storytelling gives way to reflections on love, faith and death. An older man pleads for affection and offers his gold; later, the speaker imagines sleep and death as crossings toward rest. For readers of American poetry, the interest lies in Miller's changing rhythms and his use of sea and river imagery to express longing and spiritual uncertainty.
