About this book
Gertrude Hall's English versions of Paul Verlaine appear here with pictures by Henry McCarter. The contents are arranged under headings that include Fêtes Galantes, Ariettes Oubliées, Paysages Belges, Jadis et Naguère, Parallèlement, Poèmes Saturniens and Paysages Tristes. Poem titles include "Clair de Lune", "Mandoline", "Colloque Sentimental" and "Chanson d'Automne".
In "Sur l'herbe" short lines of talk mention an abbé, a marquis, a wig and wine of Cyprus, and a voice says "Let each kiss his own lady". "L'Allée" shows a powdered, rouged woman in a long blue gown walking a shaded alley with a fan in her jeweled fingers. "A la promenade" has gauzy veils, fluttering satins and sunlight sifting through lindens. Elsewhere a poem addresses Inspiration as Muse, Dove and Holy Ghost, among other names.
