About this book
On a wedding anniversary walk through the fields, Vaughan tells his wife that their love will become the subject of his poetry. Coventry Patmore builds this narrative poem around the feelings, courtesies and uncertainties of courtship, placing them beside reflections on marriage and devotion. A return to Sarum Close brings cathedral bells, flowering windows and the household of Dean Churchill into view.
Short preludes introduce the longer scenes, allowing general thoughts on love and duty to interrupt the personal story. A walk with Honoria becomes the occasion for a hesitant declaration of love. The poem gives small gestures and familiar surroundings considerable emotional weight: an arm resting on another, distant chimes and a pause before speaking. Readers interested in British domestic verse can find both its close observation of ordinary moments and its strongly idealized view of women's place within marriage.
