About this book

Bertrand Russell begins with an everyday division between mind and matter, then examines whether either term names something simple. In these philosophical lectures, published in 1921, he brings developments in psychology and physics into the same discussion. Behaviour observed from outside and experience understood from within become parts of an account in which mental and physical events share a more basic foundation. The topics include consciousness, habit, perception, language, belief and feeling.

Memory provides a concrete example of his approach. The image of a past event exists in the present, along with the belief that it refers to something earlier. Russell examines what those elements contribute and why a clear image need not be a trustworthy one. Readers interested in theories of thought can follow his effort to separate familiar assumptions from the processes they are meant to explain, especially where remembering, knowing and believing overlap.
