About this book
The title page gives the book as Port Arthur, A Monster Heroism, by Richard Barry, with illustrations from photographs taken on the field by the Author. The writer asks an officer how many days and how many to take the fort, and the answers given are fifty-nine and four thousand six hundred and fifty-three.
The writer says the Russians on three sides held the writer and those with him in a vise, and that the bottom of the crater was paved with empty cartridge shells and bullets flattened on the rocks. The text says that not science, nor generalship, nor race bravery reduced Port Arthur, but that it was done by men who could live and die with the simple heroism of cavemen and vikings. The text describes shells constantly bursting that apparently shattered guns and killed gunners, but when the dust cleared all was instantly life again, the gnomish figures busy as ants with eggs.
