About this book
Portuguese Architecture is by Walter Crum Watson and is marked as illustrated, with front matter listing a preface, contents, a list of illustrations, an introduction, books consulted and an index. The text says that the great Moslem invasion crossed from Morocco in 711, defeating King Roderick at Guadalete near Cadiz, and that the whole country submitted with scarcely a struggle. The text says a few only of the Gothic nobles took refuge on the seaward slopes of the Cantabrian mountains in the Asturias and there made a successful stand, electing Don Pelayo as their king.
The text describes a window in the house of Garcia de Resende as one of the best examples of the complete union between Gothic and Moorish, with three shafts, one in the centre with a Moorish capital. The index includes entries such as Earthquake at Lisbon, English influence, supposed, and Entre Minho e Douro.
